2008 Commission Meeting
|
The New Jersey Commission on Higher Education convened at the
Mary G. Roebling Building in Trenton on October 27, 2008. Chairman
Laurence Downes presided. Highlights from the meeting include:

Chairman’s Report: Mr. Downes commented on reaching out
to the Commissioners regarding the membership needs of the
EOF, HESAA,
and EFA Boards.

Executive Director’s Report: Executive
Director Oates commented on the Commission’s potential
budget cuts for fiscal 2010, and two grants the Commission
received to look at college
readiness
and improving college access.

Presidents’ Council Report: Sister Jeffries reported
on a resolution on campus safety and security, the preparation
of draft
statements on the budget and data on the economic and social
impact higher education has on the state, the support from
the presidents
for NJ Transfer, and the sub-committee on service learning.

NJ STARS Task Force Final Recommendations: Executive
Director Oates commented on the Task Force’s recommendations
to the Governor and the Legislature.

College Spotlight – Bergen Community College: Dr.
G. Jeremiah Ryan, president of Bergen Community College, presented
an overview
of the launching of the institution’s newest learning facility
at the Meadowlands in Lyndhurst. He also discussed the college’s
regional mission to enhance business and economic
growth throughout northern New Jersey.

Micro Tech Training Center Petition to Offer the Associate
in Applied Science Degree in Diagnostic Medical Sonography: The Commissioners
unanimously adopted a resolution authorizing initial licensure
for a period of two years as Eastern International College
with a main campus in Jersey City and a branch in Belleville to offer
the AAS in Diagnostic Medical Sonography.

EOF and HESAA Updates: EOF Executive Director Glenn Lang said they
are working on their fall conference. Ms. Rosy Matos, Vice
Chair, HESAA, commented on recent federal actions to ensure the continued
availability of federal student loans in the face of the
financial crisis.

Comments from the Public: Professor David Stout, Vice President,
Association of NJ County College Faculty, commented on the
changes in general education courses at the county colleges.
