One-Minute Summary
October 23, 2009 Commission Meeting

The New Jersey Commission on Higher Education convened at the Mary G. Roebling Building in Trenton on October 23, 2009. Chairman Edward Graham presided. Highlights from the meeting include:

  • Chairman’s Report: Mr. Graham reported on the cancellation of the November 13 meeting and the ongoing discussion with the Officers of the Presidents’ Council and the Executive Committee of the Commission on the future needs for facilities for the colleges and universities.

  • Acting Executive Director’s Report: Acting Executive Director Beardsley reported on working with the Treasurer’s and Governor’s Offices on data in support of the federal stimulus money, making available on the Commission’s website the 2009 institutional profiles, and her testimony before the Capital Planning Commission about capital support for state-owned facilities.

  • Presidents’ Council Report: President McCormick reported on the Campus Safety and Security peer reviews and best practices, the near completion of the Economic Impact Report and some of its highlights, and the continuation of discussions on the facilities needs of the colleges and universities.

  • Summer of 2009 NJ Governor’s School Report: The 2009 scholars who attended the five Governor’s School programs this summer completed pre- and post-surveys regarding their expectations and experiences, and follow-up surveys were completed by summer 2008 scholars providing college enrollment and other post program data. Ms. Angela Bethea provided an overview of the survey results.

  • DeVry University Petition to Offer the AAS in Web Graphic Design, the BS in Multimedia Design and Development, and the MBA Degrees: The Commissioners adopted a resolution licensing DeVry University to offer the Associate of Applied Science in Web Graphic Design, the Bachelor of Science in Multimedia Design and Development, and the Masters in Business Administration degrees at its campuses in North Brunswick and Paramus for a period of three years.

  • Montclair State University Petition to Exceed its Programmatic Mission to Offer the Doctor of Education in Teacher Education and Teacher Development Degree: The Commissioners unanimously adopted a resolution authorizing Montclair State University to exceed its programmatic mission and offer the Doctor of Education in Teacher Education and Teacher Development degree.

  • EFA and HESAA Updates: Mr. Landgraf commented on bond ratings of the institutions, and Ms. Torres commented on the passing by the House Education Committee with an amendment, of HR 3221, the Student Aid and Fiscal Responsibility Act of 2009, and what the Act proposes to do.

  • Public Comment: Ms. Angelica Rolon, Educational Opportunity Fund (EOF) student at Hudson County Community College, discussed the benefits of the EOF program and how it helped with her success. Ms. Anne-Simone Trosiles, Educational Opportunity Fund (EOF) student at New Jersey City University, discussed the great support from the EOF system and their tutoring.

Next Meeting: The November 13, 2009 meeting has been cancelled. The next meeting will be held on Friday, December 18, 2009, at 10:00 a.m., at the Mary G. Roebling Building in Trenton, New Jersey.
