Program Description:

The Upward Bound Program at Montclair State University assists low-income and first generation students with

academic support services to increase their opportunity to graduate from high school. The main thrust of the project

is to increase the skills and motivation needed to successfully complete an undergraduate course of study.

Participants are recruited from the federally approved target areas of Newark, Passaic, and Paterson.

The support services offered are a five week residential program on the Montclair State University campus and an

academic component that consists of eight Saturday sessions in both the fall and spring. Students receive

academic enrichment and instruction in mathematics and science, tutoring, SAT review, college placement

assistance and advising. The Upward Bound Program exposes students to various careers to broaden a student's

perception of opportunities available and enhance their self-esteem and self concept. Securing postsecondary

placement and graduation for the participants is a prime objective of the program.
