25th Annual Deaf and Hard of Hearing Awareness Day

June 12, 2010
10:00 AM to 11:00 PM

at Six Flags Great Adventure
Jackson, New Jersey

Deaf and Hard of Hearing Awareness Day at Six Flags Amusement Park is an annual event planned by the Division of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (DDHH). The purpose of this event is both educational and fun.  It enhances awareness of hearing loss and exposes the public to diverse communication styles used by the Deaf and hard of hearing.  Additionally, it enables the Deaf and hard of hearing to have a fun filled day without communication barriers.

A number of awareness activities were conducted at this year's event.  At the toll booth, fact sheets about hearing loss were distributed to the public along with parking passes.  In addition, a recorded announcement preceded each of the Six Flags theme shows. The recording announced Deaf and Hard of Hearing Awareness Day, and explained services available from the DDHH.  An information booth staffed by DDHH employees was available to provide follow up information and to respond to individual questions.

The diverse communication styles used by the Deaf and hard of hearing were evident throughout the park. For those who use American Sign Language, interpreters were placed throughout the park at locations such as the Information Station at Wild Safari, the Hospitality Center; First Aid Centers and all theme shows.  Assistive Listening Devices were also available upon request at all of the shows.

New Jersey Association of the Deaf coordinated ticket sales for this event. Tickets and passes were able to be used on Deaf and Hard of Hearing Awareness Day as well at any other time during the season.
