What are Food Stamps?The purpose of the Food Stamp Program is to improve nutrition and health. It helps low income households buy the food they need for a nutritionally adequate diet. The Program is authorized by Congress and operated by the state and local welfare offices.
What is the Food Stamp Screening Tool?
This tool allows you to enter some very basic eligibility requirements for the Food Stamp Program, calculates your possible eligibility for Food Stamps and provides you with an estimated Food Stamp allotment.
Who Created It?
The Food Stamp tool was developed by Mercer Street Friends in conjuction with Mercer County Board of Social Services. Recently, these organizations generously donated this tool for NJ Department of Human Services in order to make it accessible to the residents of New Jersey.

Computer Requirements to Download and Use
the Food Stamp Screening Tool:
PC capable of running Microsoft Excel 95 or more current version.
Note: When downloading the Food Stamp Screening, you MUST save the tool to your local disk or hard drive first. DO NOT choose the "OPEN" option. Once the file is saved to your hard drive, it must be opened from your computer in Excel. When the file opens, select “Enable Macros” when prompted. The FSST is now ready to be used.
If the following message appears when you open the file, close the file and follow the bullets below to reset the Excel Macro Security Level.

Click on 'Tools'
Click on 'Options'
Click on 'Security'
Click on 'Macro Security Button'
Ensure Security ='Medium'
Once you open file select 'Enable Macros'
Click 'OK' when prompted
Once the Excel macro level is reset, open the FSST file and select “Enable Macros” when prompted.
What Happens Next?
You may submit your application in person or by fax or mail, to your local County Office. After your application is received, you will be contacted to schedule a face-to-face interview to confirm your application information.
Also, please note households in which all members are applicants for or recipients of Supplemental Security Income (SSI), may apply for Food Stamps at the Social Security District office at the same time you apply for SSI.
