JERSEY CITY, NEWARK — On October 1, Department of Human Services (DHS) Commissioner Jennifer Velez visited two north Jersey community-based organizations and an elementary school to promote NJ FamilyCare enrollment and to talk with several families who registered for the program through the Express Lane Eligibility initiative about their new coverage.
In partnership with Treasury, DHS used information gleaned from the 2008 NJ 1040 tax form to identify families with uninsured children. Nearly 300,000 were contacted by NJ FamilyCare in four regional mailings. Within three months, just over 3,000 children were enrolled.

Commissioner Velez’ visits are part of a ‘Cabinet Call to Action’ issued by Governor Corzine. It is part of a multi-departmental outreach campaign. Commissioners and other administrators will be visiting hospitals, pre-schools, schools, federally qualified health centers, non-profit agencies, one-stop career centers, and community centers to meet with parents directly impacted by NJ FamilyCare, organization leaders, and encourage community-based enrollment.
