Celebration of Womanhood
Conference for Young
Women |

|
|
NEWARK
- The first of two regional Celebration
of Womanhood conferences will be held
at the University
of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey
(UMDNJ) Medical Building,185 South Orange
Avenue, in Newark on Saturday,
April 16, 2005. More than 200
participants are scheduled to attend.
(agenda
and directions)
A second conference for the southern part
of the state is scheduled for Thursday,
April 21, at the Clarion Hotel and Conference
Center in Cherry Hill.
The conferences are coordinated by the
New Jersey
Juvenile Justice Commission through
the Governor’s Juvenile Justice
and Delinquency Prevention (JJDP) Committee.
The JJC, which is the designated planning
authority for the allocation of federal
grant funds, works with the JJDP Committee
to identify appropriate programs, award
funds and monitor success. The JJDP Committee
is responsible for the distribution of
more than $3 million annually in federal
grants to local and state agencies to
reduce delinquency and create local delinquency
prevention programs. The conferences are
being coordinated by the JJDP Committee’s
Young Women's Action Agenda subcommittee.
The northern conference is being sponsored,
in part, by UMDNJ. Several presenters
at the conference are professionals with
UMDNJ.
“The
New Jersey Juvenile Justice Commission
recognizes the distinct needs of female
juveniles around the state. We know that
if we can provide them with the tools
and skills to overcome challenges, they
have a much better chance of staying in
school and growing up to be successful
members of their communities,” said
Howard L. Beyer, Executive Director, Juvenile
Justice Commission. “This conference
is designed to provide female juveniles
with the tools and the resources they
need to mature into successful and confident
young women.”
This
year’s theme, “Life’s
Ingredients: A Recipe for Success,”
combines topics such as healthy lifestyles
and relationships, parenting, positive
body image/self-esteem, the effects and
consequences of gang violence, and money
management. These conferences are designed
to empower and raise the self-esteem of
New Jersey's juvenile females, while at
the same time providing them with the
resources needed to make responsible decisions.
