Trooper Avril Roena Ruffin
Over 30 years old, with two teenagers, and no law enforcement background or experience, Avril Roena "Roe" Ruffin quit her job in the private sector to embrace the challenges of her life-long dream to enter the world of law enforcement.
Slightly intimidated by the small percentage of female applicants to the New Jersey State Police and the even smaller percentage of African American females, Roe decided to complete the application and enter the Pre-Employment Preparation Program (PEPP) as she prepared for the academy. She found PEPP to be an excellent experience, provided to disseminate the expectations of the academy, becoming a Trooper, and the core values of the New Jersey State Police.
On April 29, 2005, Avril Roena "Roe" Ruffin graduated from the Training Academy and became an enlisted member of the New Jersey State Police. This was her greatest accomplishment and one that made her family very proud.
The distinct reputation of the NJSP has made this accomplishment two-fold and has inspired her to give back to the community by way of mentoring recruits aspiring to take on the challenge. For Tpr. Ruffin, the decision to become a State Trooper was the right choice at the right time and provided the opportunity to evaluate the options available to become specialized in many different fields.
She was assigned to Woodstown and Bridgeton stations in Troop A responding to critical incidents, apprehending criminals and community policing. She is currently stationed on the NJ Turnpike Troop D in Moorestown.
After attending colleges abroad in Canada, Tpr. Ruffin obtained both her Bachelors and Masters Degree from Fairleigh Dickinson University in New Jersey.
Tpr. Ruffin is a proud mother of two who embraces the everyday challenges of being a Jersey Trooper. |
