Trooper John W. Staas

John W. Staas was born in Camden, New Jersey on July 22, 1927. He graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School and served in the United States Navy during World War II. He later resided in Egg Harbor, New Jersey.

Trooper Staas enlisted in the New Jersey State Police on December 20, 1954 as a member of the 47th State Police Class. His service with the Division was characterized by loyalty, fearless performance of duty and faithful and energetic devotion to the principles of the New Jersey State Police.

Trooper Staas died as a result of an automobile accident while in the line of duty.

At 2:20 a.m. on December 2, 1961, Trooper Staas was travelling along Route 30 West in Mullica Township, Atlantic County, New Jersey in extreme heavy fog. Trooper Staas hit the left rear of a 1949 GMC Panel Truck. Trooper Staas lost control of his troop car, crossed the east bound lanes and struck a large Elm tree just off the shoulder on the left side of the highway. He was killed instantly.

Trooper Staas served 6 years and 11 months with the New Jersey State Police.

Trooper Staas was survived by his wife, two sons aged 6 years and 3 years and two daughters, aged 14 years and 4 years. He was 34 years old.
