State Police Looking to Intercept Drunk Driving on Super Bowl Weekend

West Trenton, N.J. - The Super Bowl is only two days away and as everyone prepares for the big game, the New Jersey State Police will have increased patrols statewide to target dangerous driving behaviors.

In addition to normal patrols, there will be approximately 70 additional troopers deployed state-wide from Saturday, February 4 to Monday, February 6. Troopers will focus on DWI, aggressive driving, seatbelt usage, cell phone violations, and motorists exhibiting signs of distracted driving.

"The only way that you can guarantee that you're a winner this weekend is by not getting behind the wheel after drinking," said Colonel Rick Fuentes, Superintendent of the New Jersey State Police. "If you plan on drinking alcohol, make sure that you either have a place to stay, a designated driver, or an available car service for a safe trip home."

Although only one team will come out on top on Sunday, we are tossing up some easy tips everyone can win with.

  • Avoid drinking too much alcohol too fast. Pace yourself - eat; take breaks; alternate with non-alcoholic drinks.
  • Designate your sober driver before the party begins, and give that person your vehicle keys.
  • Use an available car service or ride sharing application if you don’t have a designated driver.
  • Remember, Friends Don’t Let Friends Drive Drunk. Take the keys and never let a friend leave your sight if you think they are about to drive impaired.

Don’t get sacked for a loss this weekend by getting behind the wheel after drinking alcohol. Enjoy the game, make responsible decisions, and get home safely.
