State Troopers Perform Life-Saving CPR on Man Involved in Car Crash

South Toms River Boro, N.J. - Two New Jersey State Troopers performed life-saving cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) on a man for several minutes after he suffered injuries as a result of a car crash.

On Thursday, February 22, Sergeant Karen Fahy and Trooper I Christopher Herman were patrolling the area of milepost 80.4 southbound on the Garden State Parkway when they observed the victim’s Chevrolet down an embankment in the center median. When they approached the vehicle, the victim was unresponsive, so they had to break a window in order to render first aid.

Trooper Herman radioed dispatch requesting medical personnel before running to his troop car to retrieve an automated external defibrillator (AED). As Sergeant Fahy attended to the victim, he stopped breathing and had no detectable pulse.  When Trooper Herman returned, they removed the man from the car, laid him flat on the ground and administered chest compressions and rescue breaths for several minutes until Toms River Emergency Medical Services arrived.

Personnel continued CPR until a pulse was detected.  The victim was transported to Jersey Shore Medical Center where he was treated and remains in stable condition.
