Finance Soldier, NCO of the Year from the 50th Finance Battalion

By Spc. Bill Addison, 444th MPAD
Winning the title of Soldier or NCO of the year for your battalion is no small feat, and the Soldier who does so has shown their own commitment to excellence. But when two Soldiers from the same battalion go on to win the same title on a national level; perhaps the battalion itself deserves some of the credit.

That’s exactly what two New Jersey Army National Guard Soldiers did.
Staff Sgt. Daemion Clarke, and Spc. Carlos Arboleda, both from the 50th Finance Battalion, were named Finance NCO and Soldier of the year for the National Guard in January.

The 40-year-old Arboleda was surprised to say the least.

“I feel excited, happy; I’m definitely surprised,” he said.

Clarke, a 28-year-old tax accountant from Lawrenceville, had similar feelings.
“I feel honored. I don’t think the magnitude of the award has really sunk in yet.”
Lt. Col. Christopher Eads, commander of the 50th Finance Battalion, was more than pleased.

“I’m very proud of these two Soldiers – couldn’t ask for more. He added, “These two Soldiers in essence symbolize what the Finance Battalion is about.”
To receive the award, both Soldiers had to first prove that they were proficient not only in basic Soldier skills, but also in their MOS.

Now, both Soldiers have the chance to compete for the Army-wide title in April at Fort Jackson, S.C.

Deployed Service Members get extension on filing taxes

The Family Readiness Groups have received many questions regarding filing of 2006 Federal Income taxes for deployed soldiers. If a soldier is deployed and serving in a combat zone he or she is automatically granted an extension of filing for 180 days. The 180 days starts on the day he departs for the combat zone, so in most cases the soldiers we have deployed from D/250th BSB and Trp C/5-117th will not be required to file their tax forms until late 2007 or possibly early 2008.

As New Jersey’s largest military museum, with three locations – in Sea Girt, Lawrenceville and the War Memorial Building in Trenton, along with a traveling mobile museum – its staff is known for their knowledge and expertise when someone has a question about New Jersey’s military history.

Consider becoming a member today; membership applications are available on the museum’s Web site: http://www.nj.gov/military/museum/index.html. Cost is just $10 a year. If interested in becoming a volunteer, contact the Sea Girt museum at 732-974-5966 or Lawrenceville at 609-530-6802.

Bill Extends Education Eligibility

A bill which extends eligibility for higher education tuition assistance to certain former members of New Jersey National Guard and increases the number of tuition-free credits available to National Guard members and their dependents was signed into law by Governor Jon. S. Corzine on Jan. 24.

The legislation would allow National Guard members who are called into active duty to utilize state tuition assistance credits after their enlistment expires.

Under the old law, active members of the New Jersey National Guard may receive up to 15 credits per semester tuition free from public institutions of higher education in the State. Similarly, the child or surviving spouse of a National Guard member killed in the performance of his duties may also receive this benefit.

This bill, A-2542, amended the law to extend eligibility for this higher education tuition benefit to members of the New Jersey National Guard whose use of the free tuition benefit is interrupted by a deployment to active duty. The change would permit these soldiers to receive their earned educational benefits should their enlistment expire, or should they be medically discharged, prior to completing their studies.

The new law will also increase the number of credits eligible for funding under this program from 15 to 16 per semester.

Scholarship information on BBB Military Line

There are many scholarships available to military family members. The Better Business Bureau (BBB) Military Line suggests that you not pay someone to find scholarships for you. Why? Because these researchers will use the same sources on the internet that you will use, so why pay them to do so? For suggestions on where to find scholarships for which you might be eligible, visit: www.enewsbuilder.net/cbbbmilitary/e_article-000694547.cfm?x=b8r7v3.
