VIETNAM ERA EDUCATIONAL CENTER HOSTS AUTHOR LECTURE AND BOOK SIGNING

On Thursday, September 21 at 7:00 p.m., the New Jersey Vietnam Veterans’ Memorial Foundation will host a lecture by Author Norman E. Berg about his book Regret to Inform You: Experiences of Families Who Lost a Family Member in Vietnam at the Vietnam Era Educational Center in Holmdel.

Norman E. Berg, formerly of Belford, New Jersey, lost his son George P. Berg in the Vietnam War. George graduated from both Toms River High School and Bradens Prep School before attending Penn State where he enlisted in the US Army during his junior year. He served as a warrant officer, flying helicopters with Company A, 101st Aviation Battalion, 101st Airborne Division in Vietnam. George was listed as Missing In Action February 18, 1971 and then in April 1971 he was listed as Killed in Action - Remains Not Returned. George P. Berg is honored on The Wall in Washington and on the New Jersey Vietnam Veterans’ Memorial.

Norman E. Berg was commissioned in the US Naval Reserve as a naval aviator on December 10, 1941. He was a carrier pilot in the Pacific theater during World War II flying torpedo planes from 1942 through 1945. He flew again as a carrier pilot in a night carrier squadron during the Korean Conflict. He retired in August 1966 with the rank of Captain after serving a final post as the Commanding Officer of the Naval Training Unit, Lakehurst, New Jersey. After retiring from the Navy he held an executive position with the Boy Scouts of America until retiring again in 1985.

Regret to Inform You relates the stories of eight families who endured a terrible waiting game. How you cope with an enlisted loved one declared missing in action, remains not recovered. These are stories of real people. None of the names have been changed. All of the events described have been related by the families themselves.

Lecture attendees are asked to RSVP at least one week prior to the event to (732) 335-0033. A donation of $5.00 per person is suggested.

The Vietnam Era Educational Center is located adjacent to the New Jersey Vietnam Veterans’ Memorial off the Garden State Parkway exit 116. The Educational Center is regularly open Tuesday through Saturday, 10 AM - 4 PM. Regular admission is free for veterans and active-duty military personnel. Regular adult admission is $4.00; student and senior citizen admission is $2.00, and children under 10 are admitted free.
