New Jersey National Guard Will Increase Number of Soldiers at Airports

In response to President's Bush's call for increased National Guard presence at airports, Acting Governor DiFrancesco has authorized an additional forty soldiers to be mobilized and deployed to Newark, Trenton-Mercer, and Atlantic City Airports. The additional Guard personnel will be on duty from November 15th through January 7th to help augment security during the busy holiday travel season. Soldiers will be drawn from the battalions of the 50th Brigade of the New Jersey Army National Guard. Units are located in Port Murray, Riverdale, Morristown, Woodbury, and Vineland.

The additional soldiers will be incorporated into the current shifts at each location. Like the existing Guard personnel, these soldiers will be armed and will be assigned to perform a variety of security-related tasks. NJ Guard soldiers have been on duty at airports since October 5th and have been assigned to security checkpoints at every terminal. New tasks may include luggage checks, perimeter patrols, access control, and general terminal security.

Currently New Jersey has over 1300 soldiers and airmen on active duty dealing with the consequences of the 11 September attack. Duties range from providing security at nuclear power plants and airports, to flying fighter missions over the Northeast corridor, to managing donations.

For more information about this additional mobilization, or other operations of the New Jersey Army or Air National Guard, please contact Colonel John Dwyer at 609-530-6939.
