VIETNAM ERA EDUCATIONAL CENTER
HOSTS FILM DISCUSSION
HOLMDEL, NJ - In commemoration of Black History Month,
on Saturday, February 16, at 1:00 p.m., the New Jersey Vietnam Veterans'
Memorial Foundation will present "The Dream and Vietnam: African-American
Perspectives on the War." The presentation will feature the documentary
film "Vietnam-The Dream Shot Down: In the Land of Jim Crow" with a discussion
led by Vietnam Veteran Greg Payton. The program will be held at the Vietnam
Era Educational Center in Holmdel.
"Vietnam-The Dream Shot Down" focuses on the discrimination
experienced by black soldiers both during and after the Vietnam War. It
introduces issues such as the high percentages of black casualties (so
high that the front lines were dubbed "Soulville"), the racial pride and
unity that many young men experienced for the first time in Vietnam, and
the disproportionate incidence of homelessness among black veterans. The
film includes interviews with black Vietnam veterans and commentary by
historian Wallace Terry.
Greg Payton, of Jersey City, NJ, was drafted into the
Army, serving from 1967 to 1969. In a supply unit in Long Binh, South Vietnam,
Payton encountered the racism that was part of many black soldiers' Vietnam
experience. He will discuss his personal experiences and perceptions as
he introduces the film. Today, Payton is an activist against war and racism,
and works as a consultant for substance abuse and AIDS training.
Lecture attendees are asked to RSVP to the event to (732)
335-0033. A donation of $5.00 per person is suggested. The Vietnam Era
Educational Center is located adjacent to the New Jersey Vietnam Veterans'
Memorial off the Garden State Parkway at exit 116. The Educational Center
is open Tuesday through Saturday, 10 AM - 4 PM. Regular admission is free
for veterans and active-duty military personnel. Regular adult admission
is $4.00; student and senior citizen admission is $2.00; and children under
10 are admitted free.
