Changes proposed to rules concerning public access to government records LAWRENCEVILLE, NJ - Brig. Gen. Glenn K. Rieth, the Adjutant General of New Jersey, has proposed new rules concerning public access to government records. On January 8, 2002, the New Jersey Legislature passed, and the acting Governor approved P.L. 2001, c. 404, known as the Open Public Records Act, which enacted changes in the law concerning public access to government records. The law, which becomes effective July 7, 2002, expands the public’s right of access to government records and facilitates the way in which that access is provided by the custodian of those records. The proposed new rules establish the process by which members of the public may seek access to government records in the possession of the New Jersey Department of Military and Veterans’ Affairs or agencies within the Department. The entire notice of proposal will be published in the New Jersey Register on July 3. The public has 60 days in which to comment. Persons wishing to do so may submit comments to: New Jersey Department of Military and Veterans’ AffairsFor more information, contact Capt. Phillips at (609) 530-6898. |
