National Guard Open House at Somerset Armory October 5th

Somerset, NJ - The 42nd Infantry Division Support Command (42d DISCOM) will hold an open house at the Armory in Somerset on Saturday, October 5th from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. The public is invited to tour the armory, view military equipment and vehicles, and speak to DISCOM soldiers about their experiences and recent deployments in support of homeland security. Benefits of Guard membership – such as FREE state college tuition and job training – will be highlighted at displays set up around the Armory. There is no cost to attend the event and there is plenty of on-site parking. The Armory is at 1060 Hamilton Street (Route 514) in Somerset, just outside New Brunswick.

The Military Transport Association of North Jersey will be displaying more than 40 historic military vehicles at the armory on Oct. 5 as part of the open house. This club is made up of hobbyists who restore and drive old Jeeps, light trucks, duece-and-a-halfs, and light armored vehicles. The vehicles range in age from Word War Two to the Desert Storm era. The club has planned events, like a truck rodeo, all day long.

DISCOM soldiers are currently deployed in support of New Jersey State Police and other security forces in safeguarding the nuclear power stations at Oyster Creek and Salem, N.J. Previously the soldiers were used to protect the George Washington Bridge and the tunnels between New Jersey and New York. DISCOM soldiers were also part of the initial responders to the Attack on America on September 11th and continued to support recovery operations from Jersey City, Staten Island, and Bayonne until January 2002.

The 42nd DISCOM is a major National Guard command with subordinate support battalions in Teaneck, and Sea Girt, a Signal battalion in Westfield; as well as a support battalion in Vermont and a support battalion in New York. The DISCOM is always looking for qualified members who want to serve their community and country while attending school or holding a civilian job.
If you have questions about the open house, please contact Colonel John Dwyer, DISCOM Commander at 732-418-3312.
