THREE LIFE-LONG FRIENDS TO RECEIVE SCOUTING’S HIGHEST HONOR On Sunday, June 30, at 1:30 PM, the National Guard Armory in Morristown, Headquarters to the 3rd Battalion 112th Field Artillery, will be part of yet another historic occasion. Three young men, who have been friends since the age of 2, will stand together once again as they become Eagle Scouts - the highest rank possible in the Boy Scouts of America. They will be inducted in a very rare triple Eagle Court of Honor. More than 300 family, friends, and dignitaries, including State Senator Anthony Bucco (R-25) and Assemblyman Rick Merkt (R-25) will witness this unique occurrence. Charles Hyre and Kenneth Moy of Morris Township together with Matthew Kurek of Morristown will join the fewer than 4% of all Scouts who become Eagle Scouts. Moy, Hyre, and Kurek, who all graduated from Morristown High School on June 24th, first met in pre-school and have remained friends ever since. They joined Boy Scout Troop 112, which has been sponsored by the 3rd Battalion 112th Field Artillery for the past 21 years, at the age of 10. The three Eagles have worked side by side under the direction of Scoutmasters Sam Minetti and Tony DeCaro who also serves as the Retention NCO for Headquarters Battery, 3-112th FA, to fulfill the extremely demanding requirements of Eagle Scout. These include the completion of at least 21 merit badges, involvement in community service projects, and the successful performance of leadership positions within the troop. All three Scouts are members of the Order of the Arrow. * * Election to the Order of the Arrow is an honor accorded to senior scouts by other members of the troop. Election is based upon demonstration of exceptional outdoor skills and service to the troop. To be inducted, a scout must undergo the Ordeal (a test of physical and mental endurance), the Brotherhood Ceremony (wherein he renews his commitment to his fellow scouts), and a Vigil (during which he renews his commitment to service). |
