HOLMDEL, NJ- On Saturday, October 19, at 1:00 p.m., the New Jersey Vietnam Veterans’ Memorial Foundation will host a lecture by author Richard Linnett about his book, The Eagle Mutiny at the Vietnam Era Educational Center in Holmdel. The Eagle Mutiny, which Linnett co-wrote with Roberto Loiderman who served on merchant vessels on the “Vietnam Run” during the height of the Vietnam War, is the true story of the first armed mutiny aboard an American ship in 150 years. On March 14, 1970, two young crewmembers took over the S.S. Columbia Eagle, a cargo ship carrying napalm to Thailand for the war in Vietnam. The authors not only chronicle the mutiny and the ensuing investigation and trials, but for the first time look at the psychological factors involved. Richard Linnett of Glen Ridge, NJ, was born in Newark, NJ, and is a graduate of George Washington University in Washington, DC, and the writing program at the Columbia University Graduate School of the Arts in New York. He is a journalist whose investigative stories have appeared in many publications. Currently he is a staff reporter on a weekly business magazine in New York City. His meeting surviving Columbia Eagle mutineer Alvin Glatkowski in Washington, DC, in 1978 prompted his interest in this story. Lecture attendees are asked to RSVP to (732) 335-0033. A donation of $5.00 per person is suggested. The Vietnam Era Educational Center is located adjacent to the New Jersey Vietnam Veterans’ Memorial off the Garden State Parkway at exit 116. The Memorial and Educational Center are maintained through a partnership between New Jersey Vietnam Veterans’ Memorial Foundation and the New Jersey Department of Military and Veterans Affairs. The Educational Center is open Tuesday through Saturday, 10 AM – 4 PM. Regular admission is free for veterans and active-duty military personnel. Regular adult admission is $4.00; student and senior citizen admission is $2.00; and children under 10 are admitted free. |
