VIETNAM ERA EDUCATIONAL CENTER HOSTS
A Look at Vietnam Today

On Tuesday, July 30, at 7:00 p.m., the New Jersey Vietnam Veterans’ Memorial Foundation will present “Views of Vietnam Today.” The presentation will feature a discussion, accompanied by a slide show and a photography exhibit, by two individuals who visited Vietnam in the last decade -- one who visited for the first time and the other, a veteran of the Vietnam War, returning after more than twenty years. The program will be held at the Vietnam Era Educational Center in Holmdel.

New York City based photographer, Deborah Harse developed her affinity for Vietnam while cycling through the country in 1990 and 1994. In 1995 she lived with a Vietnamese family in Ho Chi Minh City. She spent her days exploring the city by bicycle, in search of visual treasures that a transient photographer would not find. Her photographs captured the strength and dignity she saw among the people of the city, even in the face of impoverishment and adversity.

Robert R. Amon, Jr., of Colonia, was an Army lieutenant in 1969 in charge of a five-man team of American advisors to South Vietnamese Regional Force Companies and Popular Force Platoons defending villages from the Viet Cong. In 1993, he and his wife Carolyn flew to Vietnam, so he could return one of these villages, to remember and to lay memories to rest. He tells this story as a contributor to the popular book, Chicken Soup for the Veteran’s Soul. Slides taken in 1969 and 1993 will further enhance Amon’s presentation.

Lecture attendees are asked to RSVP to the event to (732) 335-0033. A donation of $5.00 per person is suggested. The Vietnam Era Educational Center is located adjacent to the New Jersey Vietnam Veterans’ Memorial off the Garden State Parkway at exit 116. The Educational Center is open Tuesday through Saturday, 10 AM – 4 PM. Regular admission is free for veterans and active-duty military personnel. Regular adult admission is $4.00; student and senior citizen admission is $2.00; and children under 10 are admitted free.
