Armored Cavalry Units begin Tactical
Training
On June 28th 2002, more than 300 personnel from units
of the 5th Squadron 117th Cavalry will begin an ambitious schedule of tactical
field combat training activity as part of their two weeks annual training.
The Army National Guard troops from Armories in Vineland, Woodstown, Dover,
and West Orange together with their awesome arsenal of M-1 Abrams Main
Battle Tanks, M-113 Armored Personnel Carriers, M-517 command tracked vehicles,
120 mm Mortars, humvees, 2 ½ ton and 5 ton trucks, and the full
spectrum of support units will depart for the firing ranges and field training
locations at Fort Dix, New Jersey and Fort Indiantown Gap, Pennsylvania
to conduct a variety of live fire and simulated combat assault exercises.
58 soldiers from the 50th Main Support Battalion and Headquarters,
42nd Division Support Command will accompany the 5-117th CAV to provide
maintenance, transportation, supply, medical and administrative support.
There are more than 7,000 Army National Guard troops currently
serving in units throughout the Garden State. More than 1,700 troops
were placed on state active duty in response to the terrorist attacks of
September 11th to provide additional security at New Jersey airports, the
Hudson River bridges and tunnels, and at nuclear facilities.
The 5th Squadron 117th Cavalry is one of the most decorated
units in the Army National Guard with lineage and battle streamers that
include the D-Day landings and the Battle of Normandy in WWII.
