Cape May Court House, NJ - The special award ceremony that will be held on April 7, 2002, awarding the Distinguished Service Medal to 77 New Jersey residents at the Cape May County Court House Armory, 600 Garden State Parkway, Cape May Court House, N.J. will be held at 2 p.m., not at 10 a.m., as announced in a previous press release. Brig. Gen. Thomas J. Sullivan, Deputy Commander, State
Area Command, will present the state’s top military award, to the state
residents who are combat veterans of World War I, World War II, Korea,
Vietnam, Gulf War and Panama.
Thirty one of the medals will be given to members of the New Jersey Army National Guard’s 253rd Transportation Company, which is located in the Cape May Court House Armory. Eleven members of one family will be honored during the ceremony for their service to the country. Marian Wheat, a first lieutenant in the U.S. Army during World War II, will be honored for her service and will receive awards posthumously for her father’s Army service during World War I and her husband and brother’s Army service during World War II. Other members of the family have served in the Army, Navy, Marine Corps and Coast Guard. |
