Capitalizing on an outpouring of good will from the citizens of New Jersey, the New Jersey National Guard has been working around the clock to see that precious supplies of water are delivered to the areas affected by Hurricane Katrina, one of the worst natural disasters this country has ever seen.

Additionally, a contingent of Security Forces from the 108th Air Refueling Wing arrived in New Orleans in support of local law enforcement.  They will be on the ground for a week to 10 days but may be extended if called upon.

To date, through the coordination of the 250th Forward Support Battalion and the 108th Air Refueling Wing, the New Jersey National Guard has consolidated and flown approximately 5,000 cases of water down to Naval Air Station New Orleans, in the heart of all the devastation.  More flights are scheduled for today and will continue as long as water is collected.  Each flight can hold up to 1,200 cases of water.  It is estimated that at least two-dozen more missions can be flown with the water that has already been collected if requested to do so by those in charge of the relief efforts.

In order to facilitate the collection process, another National Guard Armory in Woodbridge, New Jersey has been dedicated to the water collection effort.

As a reminder, those wishing to donate water may do so at the locations listed, all day today, Sunday and Monday from the hours of 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.  It is requested that water be in cases so that they can be palletized and loaded on the aircraft as swiftly as possible. No donations other than water will be accepted at this time until we have specific requests from the affected states.
