THE STORY: Spc. David Gaines was at Camp Atterbury, Ind., going through mobilization training with the New Jersey Army National Guard's 250th Personnel Service Battalion when disaster struck at home.  The Gaines's house in Browns Mills was destroyed by fire on Feb. 18. While his wife Lolita and three children were safe, the family lost all their possessions in the blaze.  Quickly the Guard's family program staff joined forces with the community to come to the aid of his family.

Business donated gift cards to replace lost household goods and food, the Guard's State Family Readiness Council provided a $2500.00 grant, the Airmen's Attic at McGuire Air Force Base opened its doors to provide items and Fort Dix quickly provided a family housing unit so the family could move out of the hotel room provided by the Burlington County Chapter of the American Red Cross.

In less than a week the Gaines's family went from homeless to hopeful and Spc. Gaines will deploy to Afghanistan with his unit to support the ongoing Global War on Terrorism.
