Karate Classic To Benefit Troops
More than 300 martial arts students will be participating in the 4th Annual Memorial Day Invitational Karate Classic taking place on Saturday, May 28 at the Berkeley Township Elementary School, Bayville. Late registration is from 8 - 9 a.m. The fee is $55 for two events and $20 for a third event with the competition beginning at 10 a.m. There is a spectator fee of $10 for adults and $5 for children with proceeds from the event going to Family Support and Family Assistance Programs which benefit the families of troops mobilized and deployed in support of Operations Iraqi Freedom/Enduring Freedom (the ongoing war against global terrorism). Among the Karate Schools scheduled to participate are St. Jude's Judo & Karate Academy, Bayville - Sensei Robert Martinez; Isshinryu Karate Klub, Lakehurst – Shihan Don Nash; Ocean County Martial Arts center, Forked River – Renshi Larry Trainor.
Light refreshments will be available.
Sensei Martinez of the St Jude Karate Academy is an active member of the New Jersey Army National Guard assigned to Battery B - 3rd Battalion, 112th Field Artillery. A number of his fellow citizen-soldiers from the 112th were mobilized earlier this year and have been deployed to Iraq to support Operation Iraqi Freedom.
