Army Transformation Leads To Field Artillery Firing Final Rounds From Mobile Guns
M109 Self Propelled Howitzer WHO: Members of the 3rd Battalion, 112th Field Artillery located at the Morristown, Toms River and Lawrenceville armories
WHAT: During Annual Training the unit will be firing their M109 Self Propelled Howitzer's for the final time. The 3rd Battalion, 112th Field Artillery, as part of the New Jersey Army National Guard's transformation, will be converting to towed guns.
WHEN: July 28 starting at 12:30 p.m. WHERE: Fort Dix artillery firing points
The media will meet at the Wrightstown Gate, Ft. Dix Checkpoint #1, Wrightstown

Details: The 155-mm M109 series, self-propelled medium howitzers are highly mobile combat support weapons. They are air transportable, and have a ground cruising range of 220 miles at speeds up to 35 miles per hour. It allows firing in a 360 degree circle through its primary armament, the 155mm cannon assembly, and its secondary armament, the M2 heavy barrel caliber 50 machine gun. The system is capable of both direct (line of sight) and indirect (out of the line of sight) firing. The M109 was first introduced in the early 1960s. The M109 family is the primary indirect-fire support weapon of maneuver brigades of armored and mechanized infantry divisions of the US Army. |
