Ocean County Mall Hosts Ceremony To Award State's Top Military Award On July 28
WHO/WHAT: Retired Army Col. Stephen G. Abel, Deputy Commissioner for Veterans Affairs, New Jew Jersey Department of Military and Veterans Affairs will present state military awards to 50 veterans from Ocean County. Veterans will be honored at the mall's center court for service in Korea, Vietnam, Operation Desert Storm / Desert Shield and Operations Iraqi and Enduring Freedom
WHEN: Tuesday, July 28 at 10:30 a.m.
WHERE: Ocean County Mall, Hooper Ave., Toms River (center court)
DETAILS: This ceremony marks the start of a three-day visit of the veterans outreach kiosk where veterans and their family members can learn more about benefits or entitlements that they could be eligible to receive. The New Jersey Department of Military and Veterans Affairs will be bringing benefit information to ‘those who served' as part of the Veterans Outreach Program to the Ocean County Mall center court from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. each day through July 30. Veterans who miss the opportunity to visit the mall kiosk can call the department's toll free benefits information line any time at 1-888-8NJ VETS.
The N.J. Distinguished Service Medal was originally issued in 1858 for those who distinguished themselves in the New Jersey Militia. In 1988 the State of New Jersey was looking for an appropriate way to honor all of these returning combat veterans and acknowledge the debt the state owed them for their service. The N.J. DSM was then authorized for that purpose. It is New Jersey's highest military award.
In order to be eligible for the Distinguished Service Medal you must meet all the following criteria: currently be a resident of New Jersey, have been a resident of New Jersey at the time you entered into military service, have been honorably discharged and have proof of having served in combat while on active duty during wartime.
