Web-Site Created for Battleship USS New
Jersey
-Devoted to Monitoring the Battleship's Voyage to New Jersey-
TRENTON, NJ – The New Jersey Department of Military & Veterans Affairs (NJDMAVA) has created a web-site devoted to following Battleship New Jersey's trip home to her namesake state. The site will monitor the 889-ft. battleship as it is towed from the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard in Bremerton, Washington to the Philadelphia Naval Shipyard, where it will remain in storage as preparations are made for its final destination in New Jersey.
The new web-site, fully operational by Friday, September 3, can be accessed through the addresses www.battleship-newjersey.org, www.battleship-newjersey.net and www.battleship-newjersey.com. Online viewers can experience the USS New Jersey's voyage as the web-site is updated daily with photographs of the battleship enroute, responses to email inquiries and anecdotal stories.
The most decorated naval ship in U.S. history with 16 battle stars, the USS New Jersey will depart from Bremerton, head north through the Puget Sound and out the Strait of Juan de Fuca into the Pacific Ocean. Crowley Marine Services will tow the vessel with its tugboat, Sea Victory, which most notably towed the USS Missouri from Bremerton to Pearl Harbor, HI in 1998.
The 149-ft., 7,200-horsepower tug will pull the mammoth "Big J" on an approximate two-month journey down the West Coast of North America, through the Panama Canal, across the Caribbean Sea and into the Atlantic Ocean and then up the East Coast to the Delaware River. The tentative arrival date at the Philadelphia Naval Shipyard is set for November 5, 1999, weather permitting.
The NJDMAVA, under the direction of the Adjutant General, is both the headquarters for the New Jersey Army and Air National Guard and the government agency responsible for the administration of state provided veterans' programs and services within New Jersey.
