State Approving Agency (SAA)

The SAA is responsible for the inspection, approval, and supervision of programs of education and training under the GI Bill. The Agency is under annual contract with the US Department of Veterans Affairs to provide for these services ensuring that veterans and other eligible persons have access to high quality programs of education and training.

U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (DVA) General Information

The U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs (DVA) awards benefits under the GI Bill for qualified education and training programs. Benefits are payable depending on length and type of service. Below is a brief description of the current Chapters of the Law under Title 38 U.S. Code where veterans, reservists, and dependents may utilize their entitlement.

Post 9/11 Chapter 33

The Post 9/11 GI Bill is for individuals that served on active duty after September 11, 2001. Individuals may be eligible if they have served at least 90 days of active duty service and receive an honorable discharge. A graduated scale of benefits is payable up to a maximum of 36 months of aggregate service. Generally, benefits must be used within 15 years of discharge from service.

Montgomery GI Bill Chapter 30 MGIB

The MGIB provides up to 36 months of benefits for active duty after June 30, 1985. Service members must have $100 deducted from their pay during the first 12 months of service and receive an honorable discharge. Generally, benefits must be used within 10 years of discharge from service.

Montgomery GI Bill Selected Reserves Chapter 1606 MGIB-SR

The MGIB-SR program may be available if you are an active member of the Selected Reserve. The service members must sign and have an active six year contract after June 30, 1985, or extend a current contract to add up to a total of six years of service after June 30, 1985.

Reserve Education Assistance Program Chapter 1607 REAP

The REAP was established to provide educational assistance to members of the Reserve components called to active duty in response to a war or national emergency. This program makes certain reservists who were activated for at least 90 days after September 11, 2001 eligible for increased benefits.

Dependents and Survivors Chapter 35

Dependents Education Assistance provides benefits to eligible dependents of certain veterans. The program offers up to 45 months of education benefits.
