More than 85 percent of the commerce that takes place in the New York/New Jersey Port Complex occurs in New Jersey waters.
The port complex is the third largest in the United States. To meet the demands of the growing shipping industry, the Port Authority of New York & New Jersey is underway with a $1 billion investment program. The authority will reconfigure existing terminals, deepen the harbor’s channels and berths and improve inland access by rail and barge — all to create the most efficient and cost-effective port possible. The improved port will feature new high-capacity, environmentally friendly cranes that can load and unload containers more quickly and an improved transportation infrastructure that will alleviate traffic and port congestion. At the same time, deepened channels and berths will allow for the more cost-efficient and environmentally friendly transport of cargo. The South Jersey Port Corporation also have deepwater facilities and leads the region in moving products such as plywood and other lumber imports. In the last 20 years, the SJPC has become the number one port handling import wood products in the United States. SJPC is known worldwide for its expertise in the handling of breakbulk cargoes and has an unsurpassed reputation in the handling of wood and steel products. The port also handles an array of steel products including, coil steel, slabs, wire rod, structural and pipe.
