New Jersey State Police Wish Everyone a Safe Holiday Season

West Trenton, N.J. - The holidays can be as wonderful as they are hectic. At this busy time of year it is important to remember that the greatest gift that you can give this holiday season is safety.

The higher volume of holiday traffic, combined with motorists from out of town that are unfamiliar with the roads, and drivers that may be under the influence of drugs or alcohol all increase your chances of getting into an accident. Distracted and aggressive driving remains at the top of the list for causing motor vehicle crashes.

“Leave your cell phone and electronic devices alone until you reach your destination,” said Colonel Rick Fuentes, Superintendent of the New Jersey State Police. “Put your focus on the road to protect your loved ones.”

The forecast for this holiday season predicts rain and snow storms rolling through the state. Proceed with added caution on the road during the bad weather. Make sure to monitor weather conditions before you leave, and plan extra time for your trip.

To combat bad driving, more than 100 additional patrols have been scheduled throughout the holiday period and into the new year. Troopers will be on-the-lookout for specific violations that lead to crashes, including driving while intoxicated, aggressive driving (speeding, tailgating, weaving in and out of traffic), and using handheld cell phones and computers.

In 2013, there were two fatal crashes during the holiday period. The official Christmas driving period begins at 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday, December 24, 2014 and ends at 6:00 a.m. on Monday, December 29th.  The New Year’s period starts at 6:00 a.m. on Wednesday, December 31, 2014 and ends at 6:00 a.m. on Monday, January 5, 2015.
