Freehold Township High School Wins
The 2009 New Jersey Consumer Bowl

NEWARK – Students from Freehold Township High School in Monmouth County today won the New Jersey Consumer Bowl state championship for the second consecutive year. The Consumer Bowl is a quiz show-style competition now in its thirteenth year that encourages students to become well-informed consumers.

More than 80 high schools across the state competed in the Consumer Bowl this year. Similar in format to the classic television game shows, "It's Academic" and "College Bowl," the New Jersey Consumer Bowl pits teams of high school students against each other, first in county competitions and then in regional matchups leading to the state championship.

“I congratulate Freehold Township High for its second consecutive championship and commend all the schools that participated in this year’s competition for recognizing the importance of consumer education for their students,” said David Szuchman, state consumer affairs director. “The 2009 Consumer Bowl competition is over but all those who participated will be well served in the future with the information they’ve learned about New Jersey’s consumer protection laws and their rights in the marketplace.”

The championship round was held today in the Richard J. Hughes Justice Complex in Trenton. Irvington High School in Essex County took second place. The county competitions began in January.

Consumer Bowl questions included topical subjects such as investment scams, Ponzi schemes, mortgage fraud, identity theft, safety on the internet and other consumer-related issues.
