VISUALS:
Firefighters in training with self-contained
breathing equipment, six brand-new mobile
breathing support vehicles.
BACKGROUND
INFO:
The
vehicles each cost approximately $350,000
and are designed to provide breathing
air and refills for self-contained breathing
apparatus (SCBA) used by firefighters
when combating fires as well as acts of
terrorism. They were purchased with UASI
federal homeland security grant funds.
Each vehicle is designed to carry more
than 100 spare breathing air cylinders
each and is equipped with a compressor
that can refill six cylinders at one time.
Additionally, the vehicles are equipped
with large generators to provide lighting
and electric power at emergency scenes.
The
state’s regional UASI program has
been designed to protect a six-county
region that accounts for almost 45 percent
of New Jersey’s total population
(Bergen, Essex, Hudson, Morris, Passaic
and Union counties). The region is also
rich with critical infrastructure, including
chemical and pharmaceutical facilities
and key transportation infrastructure,
such as the three Hudson River crossings,
the Ports of Elizabeth and Newark, the
New Jersey Turnpike/Interstate 95, Garden
State Parkway, Amtrak’s Northeast
Corridor, Newark Penn Station and Newark
Liberty International Airport.
Each
host fire department is required to house
and maintain the vehicle, provide training
to its members, and respond anywhere in
the state that the vehicle is requested
through the New Jersey Division of Fire
Safety.
