CAMDEN
– NFL Hall of Famer Jim Brown and
Attorney General Peter Harvey will participate
in the Gangland Security Task Force meeting
at 6 PM this evening at the Rutgers University
Campus - Gordan Theater/Stedman Gallery
& Fine Arts Center - located at 314
Linden Street (off 3rd Street) in Camden.
The public hearing on gang violence is
designed to obtain information about the
scope of gang activity, develop strategies
to combat gangs and educate community
members about discouraging young people
from joining gangs. Law enforcement and
education officials will participate.
In
1988, Jim Brown created the Amer-I-Can
program, an effort to turn around gang
members from being destructive, to productive
members of society. Today, Amer-I-Can
is successfully operating in 12 U.S. cities
and promoting a skills curriculum that
is designed to teach inmates how to empower
themselves through positive self-esteem
and self-determination.
Attorney
General Harvey chairs the Gangland Security
Task Force. Simultaneous hearings will
take place in Newark, at the Rutgers University,
Newark Campus - located at 123 Washington
Street - and in Trenton, at the Thomas
Edison College, Foundation Hall - located
at 101 E. State Street from 6 - 8 PM.
