| Trenton,
N.J. -- Attorney General Zulima V. Farber,
in a response brief filed in connection
with Gov. Jon S. Corzine’s petition
to the New Jersey Supreme Court to hold
Abbott district funding relatively flat
for Fiscal Year 2007, says the proposed
budget will not require cuts in critical
education programs.
“The
Governor has taken seriously the state’s
fiscal crisis and is trying to deal with
it in a responsible manner rather than through
one-shot revenues,’’ the brief
states. “He is committed to reforming
school funding in Abbott districts and statewide
so that the constitutional promise is fulfilled
for every child.’’
In
addition, the response argues that the administration
should be granted one-year’s time
to implement new accountability measures
and create a new funding formula that is
child focused rather than district focused.
The
Supreme Court hearing is scheduled for 9:30
a.m. Tuesday, May 2. Attorney General
Farber plans to personally present the administration’s
position.
