TRENTON
- Voorhees High School is the State Champion
in the Tenth Annual New Jersey Consumer
Bowl, a quiz show-style competition that
encourages students to become well-informed
consumers, Attorney General Zulima V.
Farber and Consumer Affairs Director Kimberly
Ricketts announced today.
“Congratulations
to Voorhees High School for winning this
year’s competition,” said
Attorney General Farber. “With more
schools competing than ever before, this
year’s competition presented a great
challenge and all participants are winners
as they have an increased knowledge of
consumer issues.”
This year, 75 schools competed in the
program. Similar in format to the classic
television game shows "It's Academic"
and "College Bowl," the New
Jersey Consumer Bowl is a statewide quiz
show-style competition created in 1997
to teach young adults about consumer issues
such as buying and leasing cars, identity
theft and Internet fraud. The competition
matches teams of high school students
against each other, first in county events,
then in regional competitions and ultimately
in the state finals.
"I
would like to offer my congratulations
to Voorhees High School and all the Consumer
Bowl Finalists on a job well done,”
said Director Ricketts. “I believe,
by studying for and participating in this
competition, you have all gained the knowledge
and power you need to protect yourselves
from consumer fraud in the future.”
The
three regional winners representing northern,
central and southern New Jersey met today
in the state final, which was held in
the New Jersey State House Annex in Trenton.
Southern Regional High School in Manahawkin,
Ocean County took second place. North
Warren Regional High School, located in
Blairstown, Warren County, came in third.
The competitions began in January.
