Trenton,
N.J. – Approximately 450 deputy attorneys
general will be working throughout the state
on Election Day to help ensure a fair and
smooth-running election and to assist county
election officials in resolving any voting-related
legal issues, Attorney General Milgram announced
today.
The
deputies will be on assignment in each of
the state’s 21 counties, and 56 of
the 450 will be posted as observers in election
districts in the 29th Legislative District
in Newark and in Hoboken, where there is
a special council election. The district
observers were requested by candidates running
for office in Newark and Hoboken.
“We
are committed to protecting the right to
vote and the integrity of the election,’’
said Attorney General Milgram, who is the
state’s chief election official. “There
is no greater responsibility than ensuring
fair elections. We will be vigilant in guarding
against the potential for fraud and we will
be on-call to resolve any potential issues
regarding voting rights.’’
The
polls will be open from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m.
All 120 legislative seats are on the ballot,
plus there are four statewide ballot issues.
In addition, county and municipal offices
are at stake throughout the state. There
are approximately 4.8 million registered
voters eligible to vote on Tuesday.
The
deputy attorneys general on duty will handle
any court applications from voters and provide
legal advice to county superintendents of
election and boards of election on voting-related
matters.
Milgram
said any persons who believe they have been
the victim of any kind of attempt to interfere
with their right to vote should contact
