TRENTON – El Fiscal General Interino John J. Hoffman y la Oficina del Procurador de Fraude en Seguros (Office of the Insurance Fraud Prosecutor) anunciaron hoy que un hombre de Essex County fue sentenciado por intentar obtener aproximadamente $45,000 de una compañía de seguros reportando falsamente que le habían robado el vehículo.

Jabbar Y. Mercer, 26, de Newark, fue sentenciado a tres años de probatoria por el Juez de la Corte Superior Robert Gardner en Essex County. Mercer había admitido culpabilidad en Julio a un intento de robo por decepción en tercer grado. El cargo estaba explicado en una acusación criminal puesta por la Office of the Insurance Fraud Prosecutor.

El Procurador Interino de Fraude en Seguros Ronald Chillemi anotó que la ley de New Jersey dice que no hay presunción de encarcelamiento a una persona convicta de un crimen en el tercer grado que previamente no ha sido convicta de una ofensa procesable.

En Julio, Mercer admitió que el día 12 de Mayo del 2011, falsamente reportó a la policía de Orange City que su 2006 Mercedes Benz R500 había sido robado. Una investigación determinó que Mercer subsecuentemente puso un reclamo de robo de vehículo con la IFA Insurance Company por aproximadamente $45,000. Mercer remitió los fraudulentos documentos e hizo declaraciones juradas falsas en conexión con el reclamo de reembolso.

La investigación de la Office of the Insurance Fraud Prosecutor y de la New Jersey State Police determinaron que Mercer vendió, o causó que se vendiera, el vehículo en Mayo 3 del 2011. El vehículo fue subsecuentemente registrado y titularizado en Maryland en Mayo 4 del 2011, 8 días antes de que Mercer reportara que le habían robado el vehículo. En Junio 24 del 2011, IFA Insurance Company negó el reclamo de Mercer y refirió el asunto a la Office of the Insurance Fraud Prosecutor.
