Newark, N.J. – An extensive investigation involving the cooperation of law enforcement agencies in the tri-state area has resulted in the arrest of Tarik Smith, 26, of Newark, N.J., who authorities were searching for after he allegedly was involved in violent encounters with an armed security guard at Alamo Rental car and later with a New Jersey State Police detective.

On Tuesday, Sept. 30, at approximately 6:00 a.m., police responded to a report of a stolen car from Alamo Car Rental located on Rt. 1&9 in Newark, N.J. After the confrontation at the Alamo lot, where the guard fired his weapon, Tarik Smith is alleged to have fled the scene in a silver Monte Carlo, which was spotted nearby by a State Police detective. The detective was injured when the Monte Carlo collided with his vehicle as he attempted to apprehend the suspect driver. The State Police detective, who remains hospitalized, fired his weapon during the encounter. Smith allegedly fled and abandoned the car in another part of Newark.

Smith was located Tuesday night at a hospital in Harlem where he was being treated for a gunshot wound. Smith has been charged with attempted murder, aggravated assault, and possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose. He currently is being held in New York pending extradition to New Jersey. Bail is set at $750, 000 with no 10% option.

This incident is being investigated by the Attorney General’s Shooting Response Team. The charges against Smith are merely accusations and he is presumed innocent until proven guilty.
