CAMDEN – As part of the Christie Administration’s “Season of Service,” Acting Attorney General John J. Hoffman today announced a $50,000 state grant to a Camden drug-treatment center designed to provide education and training to the community about responding to a heroin or prescription opioid overdose. Throughout December, the Administration is continuing to serve New Jersey’s most vulnerable residents with a particular focus on drug addiction treatment and recovery.
The grant was awarded by the New Jersey Department of Human Services to Urban Treatment Associates of Camden. The center is certified by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration and licensed by the New Jersey Department of Human Services to provide opioid treatment services as well as outpatient and intensive outpatient programming. The treatment center provides services to more than 400 patients in the community, which includes a community outreach mobile unit.
The Acting Attorney General, along with several community members, received certified training to administer the antidote Narcan (Naloxone) as a nasal spray. The training was provided by Dr. David Wurtzel, MD, the administering physician for the center.
In June, Governor Chris Christie announced that all 21 New Jersey counties would implement a program aimed at reducing the number of heroin-related deaths by training and equipping police officers to administer Narcan to overdose victims. To date, there have been 390 overdose reversals through Narcan deployment by law enforcement in New Jersey. #### |
