MORRISTOWN, NJ As part of the Christie Administration’s fourth annual Season of Service, the Office of Homeland Security and Preparedness (OHSP) Director Chris Rodriguez visited the Neighborhood House Preschool in Morristown, New Jersey today to take part in a United Way of Northern New Jersey volunteer project called Book Buddies that supports early literacy efforts at child care centers.

“It was a great pleasure and honor to spend a few hours with children growing up in the town where I spent most of my youth,” said Director Rodriguez.  “I am proud to join Governor Christie and the rest of the cabinet in highlighting the importance of giving back to communities around the state during this holiday season.”

Book Buddies is a project of United Way Success By 6, which seeks to boost early literacy for children from birth through age 5, preparing them for success in kindergarten and beyond. Throughout the year volunteers visit child care center to donate books, read aloud to the children, and participate in a literacy activity. United Way is committed to providing all children, regardless of family income, access to quality early childhood education experiences.

As part of this years’ Season of Service initiative, Governor Christie’s administration officials are volunteering their time and highlighting service opportunities around the state. Individuals and organizations participating can share their experiences using the hashtag #SeasonOfService.  Residents can find volunteer opportunities, as well as recognize individuals and groups that enhance New Jersey’s communities through service, by visiting www.volunteerism.nj.gov.  You can also find photos and updates at facebook.com/NJOHSP and on Twitter by following @NJOHSP.
