The seminar will focus on such topics as design and construction requirements under federal and state fair housing laws, as well as creating accessible routes and developing accessible public and common-use areas.

Featured speaker for the event is John H. “Jack” Catlin, a partner at Chicago-based LCM Architects. Catlin has been a key figure in creation of the “universal design” concept, which incorporates both standard housing and accessible housing design.

Catlin has been integral to the development of accessibility codes and standards for state and local building codes. He co-chaired the committee that developed the City of Chicago’s first comprehensive accessibility code as part of revisions to the city’s building code. He remains actively involved in the training of professional groups, corporations, universities and government agencies in both universal and accessible housing design.

“This free, day-long seminar will provide a comprehensive look at technical standards and specifications required by fair housing laws. The training is geared toward construction professionals such as contractors, architects, designers, civil engineers and landscape architects,” said Division Director Craig T. Sashihara. “Our agencies often speak with landlords about their need to comply with laws prohibiting discrimination against persons with disabilities. But it is also vital that new buildings are constructed in a way that accommodates people with disabilities so that they can fully use and enjoy their homes.”
