The existing animal communities are shaped by many environmental factors including vegetation, fire, moisture, and water chemistry. The species which make up theses communities also pay a role in shaping the Pinelands environment. Marinating this environment is essential for the preservation of the characteristic Pinelands, fish, bird, reptile amphibian mammal, and invertebrate species

39 species of mammals, 299 Bird, 59 reptile and amphibian species and 91 fish species have been identified as occurring with in the Pinelands. They include 44 animal species listed as threatened or endangered by the New Jersey Division of fish and wildlife.
