N.J. State Commission of Investigation
Garfield School District
1995
Pursuing a statewide assault on local government corruption launched in
1992, the Commission detailed evidence of organized crime connections,
conflicts of interest and malfeasance involving personnel of the
Garfield School District in Bergen County. Responding to the
Commission's finding, district officials took steps to ensure greater
accountability in the administration of a $9 million lease/purchase
program, as well as in other areas. A follow-up investigation by the
state Education Department's Office of Compliance resulted in a number
of reforms and actions, including a recommendation that the district
reimburse the lease/purchase program fund $279,647.45 and that it
re-state its financial statements accordingly.
