New Jersey Department of State

The State Archives purchased eleven lots of unique or extremely rare New Jersey colonial manuscripts, maps, and imprints from the Jay T. Snider Collection of Historical Americana, auctioned at Christie’s in New York City on 21 June 2005. Dating mainly from the 17th-century proprietary period, the collection features several items owned by East Jersey Governor Robert Barclay (governed 1682-90) and kept by his descendants for more than three centuries. Jay Snider, former president of the Philadelphia Flyers hockey team and avid collector of historical Americana, acquired many items in the collection in London in the 1990s. Acting Governor Richard Codey and Secretary of State Regena Thomas authorized $656,760 for the purchase of these documentary treasures. The documents were formally unveiled to the public on 27 September 2005, in Princeton.
