Department of Education

The New Jersey Department of Education was established in 1945, merging the functions of the Commissioner of Education, the State Board of Education, the former Board of Regents and the former Department of Public Instruction. In 1966, the Department of Higher Education was established separately; in 1994, this department was abolished and its functions were re-assigned to the Department of Education. The following agencies have been grouped with the Department of Education for research purposes: the Department of Public Instruction, the Department of Higher Education, the state normal schools and several special commissions.

For records of school districts and local boards of education see the Municipal Government Records page.
