Boy Scouts to Pick Up Litter on Route 31

The George Washington Council of the Boy Scouts of America will pick up litter on Route 31 from Trenton to Buttzville on Saturday, May 9, 1998 from 9:00 to 10:00 AM. The litter pick up will involve 500 to 600 Boy Scouts and adults. The litter pick up is being coordinated with NJDOT’s Adopt A Highway program.

"It is gratifying to see the Boy Scouts undertaking such a large-scale litter pick-up," said Transportation Commissioner John J. Haley, Jr. "We have been concentrating our efforts in three key areas: education, enforcement and action. Saturday’s pick up is clearly an example of action being taken and I commend the Boy Scouts."

"One of the best ways to combat litter is through our Adopt A Highway program. The program not only helps with litter control, it instills a sense of responsibility in all of us. We are also looking for partners in New Jersey’s corporate community to aggressively build on that program," the Commissioner said.

The Adopt-A-Highway program currently has 650 volunteer groups participating, with 876 of the state’s 2,400 highway miles adopted. The Adopt a Highway program, along with the Inmate Litter Program, have been the lynchpins of DOT efforts to control litter. The DOT also established last year a toll-free hotline to report litter, 1-800-524-7455.

For more information about the pick up, please contact Dirk Zondag of the Boy Scouts at (609) 799-6687.
