West Amwell Maintenance Yard to
be Dedicated in Memory of Louis Caruso

Transportation Commissioner James Weinstein will join members of the Caruso family, friends, NJDOT staff and local officials on Monday, October 18, to formally dedicate the West Amwell maintenance yard in the memory of Louis Caruso, a veteran NJDOT employee who tragically lost his life in the line of duty earlier this year.

ALou Caruso was the epitome of a dedicated NJDOT employee and devoted public servant,@ Weinstein said. AHe spent a half-century at this department and demonstrated on a daily basis to workers nearly half his age how to do a job right and take pride in their work.@

Weinstein will officially dedicate the yard in Caruso=s honor at 11:30 at the facility located on Route 179. Signs will be unveiled at the yard and along the road. Directions are attached.

Caruso, a 50-year NJDOT employee, was an assistant supervisor on Crew 368 out of West Amwell. On June 18, while erecting safety signs along Route 22 in Phillipsburg, Caruso was fatally injured when a cement truck toppled over striking a NJDOT truck utility truck that ultimately hit him.

A Princeton native, Caruso resided in Baptistown, Hunterdon County. He was hired in 1948 as a maintenance worker after serving in the Navy during World War II.

Caruso and his crew were twice selected by the NJDOT for safety awards and in 1987 was chosen Employee of the Year.
