NJDOT Proposes New Rules
Prohibiting The Transport Of Hazardous
Materials Through Route 29 Tunnel Facility


The New Jersey Department of Transportation has proposed new rules that establish prohibitions against the transport of hazardous materials into and through the Route 29 tunnel facility currently under construction.

The proposed new rules would require their interpretation to be consistent with applicable provisions of federal law governing the transport of hazardous substances. The New Jersey State Police would have exclusive jurisdiction to enforce the rules. The proposed new rules would provide exceptions for certain circumstances and vehicle types. The proposed new rules would establish fines ranging from $500 to $25,000 for violations.

The proposed new rules are published in the October 15, 2001, issue of the New Jersey Register. The public has until November 14, 2001, to comment on the proposal.

Comments on the proposal should be sent in writing to Thomas P. The Department has scheduled a technical information meeting on the proposed new rules on Wednesday, November 7, 2001, from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. in the Multipurpose Room, NJDOT Main Office Building, 1035 Parkway Avenue, Ewing, New Jersey. Persons planning to attend the technical information meeting are asked to notify the Department at (609) 530-2038 at least three working days in advance of the hearing.

The Department has scheduled a public hearing on the proposed new rules on Friday, November 9, 2001, from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. in the Multipurpose Room, NJDOT Main Office Building, 1035 Parkway Avenue, Ewing, New Jersey. Persons planning to attend the public hearing are requested to notify the Department at (609) 530-2038 at least three working days in advance of the hearing.
