NJDOT announces $2.5 million in
Transportation Enhancement grants

(Trenton) Commissioner Jack Lettiere today announced that the New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) awarded $2.5 million in Transportation Enhancement grants funded through the federal Safe, Accountable, Flexible, Efficient Transportation Equity Act (SAFETEA-LU).

"The Transportation Enhancement program enables NJDOT to invest in non-traditional projects that improve the quality of life in communities statewide ,” said Commissioner Lettiere. “ These investments will pay dividends for generations of New Jersey residents.”

The grants will fund 14 projects in fiscal year 2006, including $250,000 for the Rahway River Bike Path in South Orange Village Township, $200,000 for the Perth Amboy Gateways and Historical Markers in Perth Amboy, and $100,000 for the Central Railroad of New Jersey Caboose Project in Fanwood Borough.

Transportation Enhancement (TE) projects are designed to preserve and protect environmental and cultural resources and promote alternative modes of transportation. Transportation Enhancement grants typically fund non-traditional transportation projects, including the creation of bicycling and pedestrian trails, restoration of historic canals, historic train station rehabilitations and improvements to downtown streetscapes. NJDOT awards funds for project design, right of way acquisition and construction.
